When you combine exceptional winemakers, a stunning vineyard and a stellar vintage, the resulting wine is a compelling one. A glorious expression of the variety, this latest offering exhibits aromas of dark plum, spiced cherry, black olive, game and cedar on the nose, leading to a concentrated and richly fruited palate that is intense and formidable, while remaining perfectly poised and balanced. The wine offers layers of delectable flavours and rich texture, wonderfully framed by loads of polished tannins. This is not a huge monster, rather a stylish and refined rendition offering exceptional fruit purity as well as seductive complexity. 100/100 (5 Stars)
— Sam Kim, Wine Orbit – August 2016

The 2014 Trinity Hill Homage release is the 8th of their flagship red wine since the establishment of Trinity Hill in 1993. 2014 was another superb season in Hawkes Bay with warm conditions allowing us to fully ripen our grapes and to craft an outstanding wine that again validates its world class reputation.

Homage has its origins in the Northern Rhone Valley of France. In 1981, Founding Winemaker, John Hancock had the opportunity to visit the Jaboulet winery in Tain l’Hermitage and meet Gerard Jaboulet and his father, Louis. At the time, a wine that genuinely appealed to John was the renowned Paul Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle. John would return to the Rhone Valley to work the 1996 harvest at Jaboulet, re-igniting his friendship with Gerard Jaboulet. The renowned winemaker strongly influenced John’s approach to making great Syrah and in addition, Gerard sent three clones of Syrah and a clone of Viognier from the Jaboulet vineyards in Hermitage to New Zealand as a gift. In 1997 Gerard passed away at the young age of 55, thus subsequently becoming the inspiration for Homage.

At Trinity Hill, they planted our first Syrah vines in the Gimblett Gravels in 1995 with cuttings sourced from the neighbouring Stonecroft vineyard. These vines originate from the Te Kauwhata ‘Hermitage’ Syrah line, originally sourced from Australia with traces to the Busby ‘Hermitage’ lineage in his 1832 collection brought from Europe. The first small batch of Syrah was made in 1997. Over the subsequent years extensive trials were carried out to look at the effect of low yields and special canopy management in the vineyard on wine quality.

The Jaboulet Hermitage cuttings went through quarantine and were propagated then planted in 2002. Fruit from these vines originating from Hermitage, along with the original “Stonecroft” plantings are now predominantly used to make Homage. 2014 Homage follows the internationally acclaimed release of the 2013 which was awarded a place in the Top 100 wines of the year by The wine also scored 95 points with Wine Enthusiast magazine, the highest score on record for any NZ wine. This, along with an impressive description as “the most perfect young red wine tasted from New Zealand” by Geoff Kelly.

Trinity Hill are immensely proud of Homage as it has established itself as one of the great wines of the world.

2014 was an exceptional quality vintage for Syrah in Hawkes Bay. A fantastically warm summer was followed by a mild and dry early Autumn.

Special canopy management of the vines along with impeccable viticulture during the growing season ensured that the fruit quality was of the highest order. Pruning and shoot/bunch thinning at appropriate times gave a crop level of around 5 tonnes per hectare (approximately 35 Hectolitres per hectare).

Hand-picked grapes were sorted with 60% de-stemmed and lightly crushed to leave a large portion of complete berries. 40% of the remaining volume of fruit was 100% fermented as whole bunches including the use of traditional foot-stomping to initially break open a portion of the berries. The cap was hand-plunged and/or pumped over twice daily for optimum colour and tannin extraction. The average time on skins was 30 days with one component up to 54 days. This post-fermentation maceration helps with the complexity of tannins, softening and stabilising the wine.

The wine was subsequently aged in predominantly new French oak barriques for 14 months with malo-lactic fermentation beginning in tank and finishing in barrel. A portion of the wine was aged in large format 5000 litre oak ovals. The wine in barrel was not racked during this time. Some barrel stirring was carried out when appropriate.

We are immensely proud of Homage as it has established itself as one of the great wines of the world.

The 2014 Homage is beautifully floral with interwoven berry purity and oak sophistication. This is a darker fruited vintage with brambly, blackberry notes dominating the aromatics. There is a dimension of florality and seamlessness coming from increased vine age and the presence of whole bunch fermentation. 2014 has produced a wine that is very powerful and fragrant. The wine shows great concentration and weight with a very crucial elegance. The structure is tight and tense which will allow the wine to age gracefully for many years (10+).
