White Rabbit White Ale
The white ale has a lovely balance of wheat spice, clove and added coriander. Those that love orange flavoured chocolate can’t go wrong pairing up here. Try the Lindt Orange Intense. The fruitiness of the chocolate and spice of the beer are awfully seductive. The softer, stronger and fresh cheeses work well here, I’d go Chevre. It’s sharp acidic but clean flavour sit really nice with this beer.
This beer is an old favourite, the Nelson Sauvin hop used in the beer has lovely grapefruit and white wine under tones. A good chocolate goto would be a classic, well-made milk chocolate. Like the beer, milk chocolate is a classic style. I’d go with a Swiss style eye cheese, Emmental or Gouda (even though its Dutch). These are usually sweet, nutty and well balanced. This cheese will pair with the beer but also allow it to shine.
Panhead Port Road Pilsner
I’d go white chocolate - perhaps Rafaello. The balanced pilsener body doesn’t override the chocolate, and both the carbonation and bitterness help cleanse the creaminess of the white chocolate on the palate. Cheese wise, pilseners fit perfectly with aged cheddars with their sharp bitey finishes – King Island Surprise bay cheddar.
Little Creatures Pale Ale
Generally speaking Hoppier beers are harder to match with chocolate, however a safe option with is to run with a milk chocolate with some kind of addition, think fruit, spice nuts etc. Hopefully the additions pair evenly with the characteristic cascade hop notes for the LC Pale. With cheese, classic blue cheeses with their spicey sweetness are a definite goto with happy pale ales. Try Milawa Blue!
Emerson Maison Saison
This is where things start to get a little funky. Saisons are French and often described as barnyard. They are sessionable styles not like anything else. Chocolate wise try truffles and liqueur filled. In saying that its often a goto back up plan - If you can’t find a flavour match or pairing, make it regional! Similarly with cheese let’s keep the funk going and try for a washed rind cheese. These are usually the soft orange covered ones, with a very pungent funky smell. Don’t let the smell put you off. They don’t usually taste like they smell, however are great pair with the spicy and fruity funky notes from the saison.
White Rabbit Chocolate Stout
This is my favourite, the WR Choc stout has Panna raw cacao added, so why not a direct match with Panna Raw Cacao. If you want to spice it up try their dark fruit chocolate. The dark, smooth roasty notes from the stout marry the rich coffee and toasy flavours from the chocolate. Cheese wise, get a hold of some smoked cheddar. Smokes cheese come across delicately toasty often with strong bacon and meaty undertones, whilst maintain the Sharp cheddar finish.
