The ‘Hops with a Difference’ breeding program started in New Zealand in the early 1990s. With aroma a major focus throughout the program’s life, producing fine aroma varieties comparable to those in Europe has always been a goal. Riwaka hops were born out of this breeding program and for Dunedin brewer Richard Emerson they were like hop gold.
The Riwaka hop has a powerful passion fruit character reminiscent of another New Zealand classic, Marlborough’s renowned sauvignon blancs. Emerson’s Pilsner pours a pale straw colour with a palate that shows an early hint of malt sweetness before developing into a lengthy, dry finish, much like a crisp yet robust white wine.
