Japan’s Amami-Oshima Island is renowned for the exquisite kimonos some of its highly skilled inhabitants produce. Each kimono can take up to a year to create and features the shiniest silk and most intricately woven designs in Japan. Organic elements from this small, semi-tropical island are utilised during different steps of each kimono’s elaborate production. The silk, for example, is coloured a burgundy hue with natural dye made from the pulp of a local plum tree. It is then “mud-dyed” using the island’s iron rich soil to turn the silk the colour of darkest chocolate, a process which takes more than a month and is a true representation of Shokunin in action.
