SPRING VALLEY BREWERY AFTERDARK
This is a beer that reveals a surprising new dimension in a dark beer, with its name derived from the idea of going beyond or “after” dark. It carves out its own niche in the dark beer world with its rich, smooth roasted flavour, and an unexpected harmony of sweetness and bitterness, much like the taste of a flat white coffee. The secret to Afterdark comes from the malt roasting method used. When producing dark ales, the malt is ordinarily roasted with the husk still encasing it, however in Afterdark the malt is roasted with the husks removed. The result of this attention to detail is a distinctive roasted “incense”.
Afterdark’s brewer, Munenori Morimoto, has more than a decade’s experience in malt science, and it is this depth of knowledge that has allowed him to bring a newness of taste to this exceptional dark beer.
