During Australian summers, our attention naturally turns to finding spots by the water and cooling off from the heat. These three cultural offerings are perfectly pitched for pool sides or balmy summer nights coupled with Panhead’s sexy, steamy rosehip and hibiscus infused Lola Deville.
WEAR: DOUBLE RAINBOUU
DOUBLE RAINBOUU is a new fashion project by Toby Jones and Mikey Nolan, former art and creative directors of cult denim label Ksubi. Their range of Hawaiian shirts and pool-side fashion is reminiscent of Baz Lurhman’s iconic Neo-Miami in his 1996 film Romeo and Juliet. The visual identity around the label is filled with pastels and luxe irreverent lifestyle imagery as well regular collaborations with artists including Sydney’s Samuel Hodge.
SEE: MICRO CINEMAS
The last five years has seen an explosion in micro-cinemas around Australia. These spaces bring cinema to an internet generation more accustomed to watching films on their laptops. Hidden away in roof tops and alley ways these spaces are a perfect summer escape. One of our favourites is the former screening room for Paramount Pictures, Golden Age.
This Surry Hills micro-cinema offers a diverse program of independent film and re-releases of classic movies. Adjacent to the theatre is a stylish cocktail bar and small band stage that regularly holds free mini gigs from local and international acts. A breath of fresh air when a generation of viewer’s watch movies on laptops and miss out on the transformative experience of entering a darkened cinema and being immersed in a film’s world.
READ: MUSEUM MAGAZINE
The brain child of siblings Laura and Matthew Bannister, Museum Magazine is a hefty bi-annual publication of art, fashion and writing featuring a curated selection of Australian and International cultural offerings. At a time when publications are increasingly migrating or being created online, Museum Magazine is a love letter to the beauty of the printed form.
DRINK: PANHEAD LOLA DEVILLE
Summer doesn’t have to be all about sunshine and fake tans, Lola Deville is a complex new beer from Panhead that infuses botanicals into a bitter concoction that is a perfect accompaniment to sultry days and nights with an edge of mystery and just a little bit of danger.
